If you go looking for trouble, it is bound to find you.
There was no great quest, no lost magic item, no lost heir, just four restless young adults leaving their home village to look for adventure. They did not set out to save the world, but only to see a little of it. Or so they thought.
Two fighters, one magic user and one healer striding down the dirt road looking for problems they could get paid to solve, without the slightest notion of what they were getting into. Adventuring … is a fantasy set in a medieval world with more than a dash of magic.
Origin Story
As a graduate student, I got involved in the Historical Simulation Society with board games, role-playing games, and card games.
Since I also wrote fiction around the edges of my real life, it was inevitable that I would write a short story about a group of adventurers. So And Adventuring To Go… was written. And was published in the Dragon Magazine (vol 101 Sept 1985).
I even got an email from a reader asking if there were more stories about the group. This email resulted in what would be the first three pages of the chapter Vampire Groupies. And it just sat there not complete, not even completely started, while I went off chasing other storylines. (A bad habit of mine, resulting in a massive list of works-in-progress.)
Twenty-five years later, Kindle Villa started, and I realized that I had 2½ episodes of a serial. (OK, maybe more like 2¼.) So And Adventuring To Go… morphed from a short story to a Kindle Villa serial. I even had plans on publishing the episodes as a novella, some time in the future. When the story-line ended with a HFN and was marked ‘finished’ on Kindle Villa, I had hit over 70k words; my baby had grown up to be a full-sized book. (And potentially, part of a trilogy that I have planned, but not started.)
Kindle Villa has gone away, but the book carries on. And any day now I may do some marketing.
